Historic Trimmers Lane in the heart of Wexford town will host an outdoor food producers market featuring local and regional artisan producers. Food producers and growers will display fresh produce ranging from bread, cakes, ice cream, seasonal fruit including Wexford’s famed strawberries, eggs, cheese, meat and much more! A walk down Wexford’s Main Street will reveal food stands in The Bull Ring and elsewhere in the town creating a delightful food trail. To add to the festival atmosphere a tasty side helping of music and family fun entertainment will also be provided.

Hog Roast –Crackling good food from  Kelly’s Resort Hotel

Kelly’s Resort Hotel in Association with La Dolce Vita Restaurant will bring their famed Hog Roast Spit to Trimmers Lane bringing a memorable feast for the eyes and taste buds to the heart of Wexford. This will be an incredible taste experience you will savour for a long time! The Spit roasting has been around for thousands years and is a common custom in many parts of the world.

 

Viking Shield Making Workshop

Reflecting Wexford’s Viking Heritage, The Irish National Heritage Park will a host shield making workshop in Trimmers Lane. Children will have the opportunity to make and decorate shields using historical inspired designs. This fun learning experience takes approximately one hour to complete.

Last year the Irish Countrywomen’s Association celebrated 100 years of making a difference to the lives of Irish women. One of the core missions of the ICA is promoting Irish food and craft helping to support our own producers and jobs in Ireland. Come along to the ICA stand and sample the very best of local craft and food produce.

Celebrity Cookery Demonstration

Celebrity chefs Catherine Fulvio, Ballyknocken Cookery School and Wexford’s Phelim Byrne will demonstrate a range of cuisine cooking styles including Italian and Thai themed dishes in Whites of Wexford. Both critically acclaimed chefs will show attendees how to prepare a range of simple signature dishes. Attendees will receive recipe booklets and tips to help them recreate meals at home.

Fulacht Fiadh - Ancient Cooking Method

Visitors to The Irish National Heritage Park during Wexford Food Festival will have the opportunity to experience an ancient cooking method used by our ancestors when the Fulacht Fiadh (ancient cooking pit) is fired up. Dating as far back to the early Christian age between 500 BC and 1169 AD skinned animals were wrapped in straw and placed into a pit of boiling water which had been heated using rocks from a fire. It has been discovered that this ancient cooking method is very similar to that of our own modern ovens – 20 minutes to the pound and 20 minutes over! Visitors will have the opportunity to taste meat cooked in this traditional method. 

 

Families wishing to visit The Irish National Heritage Park and see the Fulacht Fiadh in action can avail of a special half price admission ticket during Wexford Food Festival – Family Ticket (2 Adults & a Children) normally €20 will be available for €10 and Adult tickets normally €8 will be available for €4 on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd May 2011.

Little Artist Club

The Little Artist Club returns this season to offer children the opportunity to explore colour and work with a range of materials including paper, paints, and toys! The workshops will include a tour of the exhibitions on display in the galleries and a discussion on why artists use colour in their artworks. In a fun and relaxed environment, children will be encouraged to work with light and colour projections, and explore how colour relates to sound and has the potential to evoke emotions.

 

The Little Artist Club is facilitated by a team of local professional artists.

Finishing the festival in style a Jazz Brunch will take place on Sunday, 22nd May in the courtyard in Whites of Wexford cooked with local produce to the sounds of local jazz musicians.  The final day of the festival coincides with the Wexford Half Marathon. All those supporting and participating in the race are welcome to come and rest you weary legs and refuel your body and spirit at the Jazz brunch.
